So, I arrived at the backpacker on Monday. I thought I wouldn’t be staying long because seasonal work didn’t start until later in October or November. I also thought everyone was traveling w/ other people, and although I was seeing beautiful things and having an adventure, I didn’t feel like I was “part” of any groups of friends anywhere.
By Wednesday I was signing a contract to work, and had met amazing people who didn’t treat me like an outsider to their friendships in any way at all. They were open, and wanting to meet others and connect with people just as much as me. It was, and is still amazing!
I was told work started Thursday morning. “Be ready to be outside and meet Ray at 7:30 a.m. He does not like to wait!”
This was kind of scary, but REALLY exciting at the same time. I knew I had to wake up in time to get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, pack a lunch, and be ready to roll with the contract, and meet Ray at 7:30 a.m.
I thought to myself setting the alarm on my ipod might be more trustworthy than my phone, so I set it the night before. I told Jacob if for ANY reason I was not awake to knock on my door. I kept my ipod on, the sound on, the alarm on, everything I knew to do...and somehow---the alarm did not go off.
I was awakened by Jacob knocking at my door. I thought he’s probably just making sure I am up...but no! It was 7:30 in the morning and Ray was waiting outside!
I have never gotten dressed so fast. The contract, papers, clothes...all flying! No breakfast, no lunch, no teeth brushing....and I ran outside to meet Ray wild eyed, and no shoes or socks.
It was truly pretty embarrassing. I was apologizing and saying my alarm did not go off. I had just washed my face and not dried it, so water was falling off my face and eyes. I was still apologizing while unstably trying to put my socks and boots on. Thankfully, he was cool about it, and it has not happened since. Jacob made sure I knew how to work my alarm.
Nonetheless, since that day...I am known in the hostel as, “Sleeping Beauty.”
